Queensland Bottle Tree - Brachychiton rupestris
Queensland Bottle Tree — A Living Sculpture Built for Australian Conditions
The Queensland Bottle Tree is unlike any other tree you can plant in SEQ. Its swollen, flask-shaped trunk stores water during drought — giving it a prehistoric, sculptural form that looks extraordinary in the landscape and genuinely turns heads year-round, not just when it flowers.
This is a tree that commands attention by shape alone. Slow-growing but extraordinarily long-lived, a Bottle Tree planted today becomes an increasingly impressive feature with every passing year — and eventually an irreplaceable centrepiece that adds significant value to any property.

Frequently Asked Questions
When does the trunk start to swell?
The characteristic bottle shape develops gradually over many years. The 200L specimens already show good trunk development. Smaller plants will develop their shape progressively — it's part of what makes this tree so interesting to grow.
How much water does it need?
Very little once established. It's one of the most drought-tolerant trees you can plant in Queensland. During establishment (first 6–12 months), water regularly to get the root system going — then step back and let it do its thing.
Is it suitable for suburban gardens?
Best suited to larger gardens, acreage, or as a focal point specimen where it has room to develop. The 45L size suits larger suburban blocks with space for a long-term feature tree.
